This free event is an annual concert provided by the Austin Symphony on Auditorium Shores. After the patriotic music has ended the event will culminate in a dazzling display of fireworks in the night sky. This event is absolutely free and a must-see if you are in town around the event!
If your end-of-summer stay takes place later in July and into August, you can catch the Zilker Music Series. This is another free event in the city that is put on by Zilker Hillside Theater. Go See the Congress Avenue Bridge Bats
Another staple for Austin locals and visitors is seeing the millions of bats that call the underside of Congress Avenue Bridge home. You read that right, there is a huge colony of bats right here in the city and migrate to Downtown Austin each spring. Austin typically sees around 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats claim the bridge as home but don’t worry as they are only here to catch bugs for food! Each evening the bats will take flight into the night sky for a truly stunning experience. Congress Avenue Bridge has several viewing areas for you to check out including Statesman Observation Center. You will want to get to the bridge early as it will fill up well in advance before sunset hits. We recommend checking out the bats from the water of Lady Bird Lake right below the bridge. You can catch a cruise with Lone Star Riverboat tours that will provide the closest viewing you can get. If you prefer to head out onto the water on your own, you can always rent a kayak or canoe and paddle up to the bridge as well. If you prefer to stick to land, head on over to Butler Hike & Bike Trail where you will find great viewing spots of the bridge too; just make sure to stay out of the bike trail to avoid any collisions! You will feel like a local when you get to experience the infamous bats take flight at dusk!
Check Out Local Eats
You cannot go to Texas without stopping by a local BBQ joint and the same can be said for Austin. You will find several different BBQ companies here in town ready to provide you with a hot and tasty meal. Stubb’s Bar-B-Q has authentic Texas BBQ in a homely setting. Make sure to get there on the weekend when they offer live music to entertain you with. Additional local favorites also include Terry Black’s Barbecue, Stiles Switch BBQ, and Rollin Smoke BBQ. After you have had your share of smoked meats go cool off with a little ice cream. Stop by Merry Monarch Creamery for their eggless ice cream that utilizes creative flavors such as Oreo miso and ricotta vanilla. The city is filled with plenty of exciting activities to enjoy all year long. Austin also features many unique attractions that are found nowhere else. One of the most popular attractions to visit during a stay in Austin is South Congress Bridge and its bat occupants. It is like a rite of passage during your first visit to Austin to see these incredible creatures take flight. Take a look at what you need to know about seeing the bats living under Congress Bridge in Austin:
What is the Attraction?
The bats living under Congress Bridge have become an icon for the city of Austin and are a must-see attraction during your visit. Congress Bridge spans all the way across Lady Bird Lake putting it right in the heart of Austin. You have probably walked or driven over the bridge without realizing that there are millions of bats currently sleeping on the underside of the bridge. Specifically, there are approximately 1.5 million Mexican free tail bats that call the underside of the bridge home throughout the year. These bats migrate to Austin during the months of mid-March through early November allowing you to see them during most parts of the year. Seeing them take flight is a truly unique and spectacular experience that everyone should experience in Austin!
When to Visit the Congress Bridge in Austin
As mentioned, the bats will typically be in Austin during the months of March through November during the year. Typically, the bats will leave Austin whenever the first cold weather of winter hits. Climate change is slowly bringing in warmer months during the year. This has led to some years receiving the bats in February instead of March as they find the weather more tolerable. The best way to know if the bats are in town is to check out available tours in the city. This will help you find out if the bats have already arrived!
How to View the Bats
Now that you know a little bit about the bats, you are probably interested in getting the opportunity to see them up close. Seeing the bats has become an important part of any Austin evening with thousands of locals and visitors lining up across the bridge to see them take flight. The bats below Congress Bridge typically take flight around 30-60 minutes before sunset hits.
Since the bats call the bridge home for most of the year, the time the sun sets can vary depending on when you visit. Typically, the sun will set later during the summer season usually just after 8:30 p.m. During the fall sunset will take place much earlier with sunset taking place before 7:00 p.m. during the months of October and November.
Make sure to look up the local sunset time during your time in Austin so you can plan ahead. Now that you have the sunset times figured out you can plan on when you want to get to Congress Bridge. It is typically recommended to get to the bridge 90 minutes before sunset so you can find a great viewing area. Seeing the bats take flight is highly popular so if you arrive right at sunset, you will not find any spots on the bridge to look from. Watching the bats from the bridge is always a free experience. With it being free you will find that the bridge will easily get crowded. Shorter individuals may also find it difficult to see over the bridge walls. Visitors will also find bat viewing areas on Congress Bridge that are the best spots to see the bats from.
Book a Capital Cruise Bat Watch Tour
The best way to experience seeing the bats, however, is by booking a cruise with Capital Cruise. They offer their bat-watching tours that will have you on Lady Bird Lake with one of their cruise ships. You will get an incredible view of the bats taking flight from the water. Lone Star Flight Museum
While the kids may typically groan at the thought of a museum, they may change their tune when it comes to this one. Come see some of the most unique, as well as historic aircraft to fly the skies! These “birds” didn’t just fly in the U.S., but throughout the world!
Wander through and explore displays of planes like the Beecraft Honey Bee – a high-wing cantilever monoplane made of all-metal. The historic plane never made it to production before the idea was scrapped, and the prototype at the museum is the only one in existence.
Get up close to the Boeing PT-17 Stearman, the primary trainer craft flown by the U.S. and other Allied nations during World War II. There were over 8,000 of the open-cockpit biplanes made throughout its production years of 1934-45. You’ll also learn about the science and history of flight through a variety of hands-on exhibits. Make sure to snap plenty of pictures of your favorites. The best part: The only cost is the price of gas for your rental vehicle.

Today, it’s a seven-mile system spanning 95 city blocks! Rather than the simple shortcut of the days of old, it’s now a popular destination for shopping, dining, activities, and more.
Many of the malls have children’s play areas where the kids can burn off some energy while the adults of the group take a seat to watch the fun while taking a break.

Houston Symphony
You may think the kids of the group would turn up their nose, but share the concert schedule with them and they may change their minds. Spend an evening with good music in an upscale atmosphere. Alongside the classics, the symphony hosts shows featuring the music of Disney’s Encanto, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert, Jurassic Park, the music of Star Wars, and more.

Watch the Famous Austin Bats
One of the worst kept secrets in Austin is now a top tourist attraction here in the city. We are of course talking about the bats that live underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge for most of the year from spring through the fall. During this time of year 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats call the underside of the bridge home. Like other animals need to get out and eat at some point of the day. Since bats are nocturnal you can see them take flight for the night at dusk for a mesmerizing experience. Grab a viewing area near the Congress Avenue Bridge to see the bats take to the sky for free. Don’t worry, the bats will not come anywhere near you but it’s never a bad idea to wear a hat to cover up any bald heads in case the bats fly over and have to relieve themselves.
